Technical Enhancements.
Free Informative Webinar to Be Scheduled!

•PDF/A-2 allows JPEG2000 compression, supports transparency effects and
layers, embedding of OpenType fonts, and digital signatures.
•It also allows archiving of sets of documents as individual documents in
one file.

(Berlin). The PDF/A Competence Center is pleased to announce that the
International Standards Organization (ISO) has published the second part of
the PDF/A standard in the form of ISO 19005-2. This provides compression,
archiving and effect enhancements, as well as allowing users to add digital
signatures.
Version 2 of the PDF/A Standard is more advanced than the original as it is
based on a more recent version, PDF 1.7 (ISO 32000-1), rather than PDF 1.4.
This offers a number of useful technical innovations: highly efficient
JPEG2000 compression, support for transparency effects and layers, and
embedding of OpenType fonts as well as provisions for digital signatures in
accordance with the PAdES (PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures) standard. It
also offers the possibility to embed PDF/A files in PDF/A-2, allowing
archiving of sets of documents as individual documents in a single file.

“PDF/A-1 remains in effect without limitation, and where PDF/A-1 features
meet current requirements sufficiently well, there is no immediate reason
to switch to PDF/A-2,” explains Olaf Drümmer, chairman of the PDF/A
Competence Center. "Users who may benefit from new features should
familiarize themselves with PDF/A-2 in the near future.”

More information about PDF/A can be found on the website of the PDF/A
Competence Center (www.pdfa.org). The group will offer free webinars in
German and English in a couple of weeks to introduce PDF/A-2.

The PDF/A-2 standard can be purchased from the ISO online store:
