Whoops, I had a copy and paste error there.  That should be

    my $maxlen = 2**8-1;
    croak "$msg is too long (there is a $maxlen byte limit)" if $len > $maxlen;
    print $sock pack "Ca*", $len, $msg;

in the second function.
