At this point, yes, there is something other than the Perl code you/I wrote that is at fault. My versions are Aspell 0.60.4-4 and Text::Aspell 0.04-3 as packaged by Ubuntu. I just upgraded it to 0.08 from CPAN and I am not getting an error. Given the fact that you have been running as root, I would suggest uninstalling Aspell and reinstall it. You may have damaged it. If that does not work then I will try to setup an environment as close to yours as possible and see if I can duplicate the error.
