Hi, I have a Solaris system. I'm having trouble installing a module via
the command:
perl -MCPAN -e shell 'install XML::Parser'
This is the first time my perl 5.6.1 installation has used CPAN to
install a module so I had to answer a bunch of questions for
configuration.
First, do I need the unix util 'make'? We do not do any compiling and do
not have this on our system.
Solaris should have a version of make, whether you do "compiling" or
not. All unix systems have it: it's the standard way to configure and
install software--even software that doesn't require actual
compilation--and a number of system daemons and stock cron jobs rely
on it for logic. It may be in /usr/ccs/bin/ instead of /usr/bin/ just
look around for it.
If you really did remove it because you thought it was only for
compiling C code, put it back. Immediately.
Second, Perl CPAN module asked me for the location of the unix util
'wget'. Is this required?
No. If wget isn't found, Perl will fall back on Net::FTP, and a few
other options until it finds something.
At the end the CPAN module tried to access the internet. It could not
find CPAN so it asked me for an URL. I entered 'http://www.cpan.org'. Is
this the right address or does it need an ftp address?
Would the ftp address be 'ftp://ftp.cpan.org'? Or something else?
Please don't do this. Near the middle of the setup process, you should
have been asked to enter the names of several alternative sites, and
presented with a list of cpan mirrors for your continent. If you
missed this, go back and reconfigure cpan:
perl -MCPAN -e 'shell'
cpan> o conf init
It's a good idea to add a few mirrors in case your primary mirror is
refusing connections. You can also find a list of mirrors at cpan.org.
Be a good netizen.
Next, when all the config was done for the Perl CPAN module, I did the
command 'install Bundle::libnet' (which the config process told me to
do) and I got an error like "Warning: Cannot install Bundle::libnet,
don't know what it is." I got the same error when trying to install
XML::Parser.
I'm guessing I entered the wrong site name for the Perl CPAN module
config. Can anyone help me?
Sounds about right. choose mirrors from the list that you know are
active, get your build environment set up, and everything should go
swimmingly.
