I work with library cataloguing records and am trying to accomplish this
amazing feat.
Trying is no problem, amazing feat is eluding me
I need to find all records with the same ISBN number (field 020)save all
matching records which will result in more than 1 record with the same ISBN,
then somehow magically end up with only 1 record containing all 856 fields.
We import these record to the database from various vendors, and some titles
are exactly the same resulting in the same title being loaded again. Our users
hate this. Why not just one title containing all the 856 fields. 856 is the
field linking to a title online.
Users could then link to whatever vendor database they like, from one record
The following two records are the same (field 020 and 245) and each links to a
different database. In reality more fields would be the same, but being at home
I don't have the actual real matching records. I just edited the records so the
020 and 245 field matched.
I would also need to retain the file of matching records before creating the
final file of 1 record with multiple 856 fields so I can use some specialized
tools here to remove all those records before loading the final file. This is
all based on that I will extract these titles from the database into a file as
I don't want direct manipulation in the database. I could blow the damn thing
up.
Crap, when inserting records from the file a space is being inserted between
each field. There should only be a space between each record. My apologies.
