Thanks for all the help.
I got it working. My xml file was not properly
consturcted and hence the problem. Has nothing
to do with the conversion.

P.S. : I observe that my mail message dont appear
immediately in the newgroup. Is it the problem with

In general, conversion from a string to a number is transparent in
Perl. "4" is the same as 4.
