I used this solution
if(/([a-z0-9\t ]*)>([a-z0-9\t ]*)/gi) { $string1 = $1; $string2 = $2; }
That was the one I suggested. It may or may not be a decent solution for what you are doing; I for one can't tell without knowing more.
One detail: The /g modifier is probably redundant.
