I am both pleased and annoyed that I have gotten very little flames over my How To posting -- not that I want to annoy people, I don't; I am simply trying to condense certain questions and thoughts that I myself had when I was starting out so that others may say 'Ohhhhhh ... I see.'
Well, since you ask...
I feel this probably isn't the right place for them. This is Perl Beginners where people write in with their Perl questions and we answer them. Your How Tos are neither question nor answer and thus, in my opinion, off topic.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're helpful to the people who read them and I'm not saying you shouldn't be sharing them with the world. I'm just not sure you should be sharing them here.
If beginners are going to search documentation, I would think they might start with Perl's documentation, where there is definitely some coverage on HERE Docs and File Handles. If not they may go to the Web and again, I suspect they'll find something. Maybe they'll pull a book off the shelf, another great resource.
Finally, they may search Perl Beginner's and if they, do they may find one of your posts, assuming they search for "HERE Documents" over "HERE Docs" for example. If they get here though, we have to ask ourselves if your post will clear up their question better than the HERE Doc questions we've answered before, to truly determine it's value. I don't know the answer to that question, but it's starting to sound like a lot of ifs to me.
Is there any reason you couldn't put these How Tos on the Web, provide a link in your signature and post a link to the appropriate document when questions arise? I believe Randal does this very thing.
The above is, of course, just my individual opinion. I can sure filter you out, if you begin to bother me, so it shouldn't affect me too much either way. ;)
