Why don't you set $ENV{'PATH'} to something else and open the filehandle for sendmail 
explicitly?

$ENV{'PATH'} = "";
open (SENDMAIL, "|/usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -t -odq");

It's one more line (for setting $ENV{'PATH'}, but it should stop -T from complaining.
