2. Upgrade Perl following the directions at: http://developer.apple.com/internet/macosx/perl.html This will get you the current version of Perl.
Right before doing #1.
3. Install the latest version of libnet, from CPAN if it will let you, otherwise directly. (You can download the package from CPAN's website.)
That's what I did. Got the libnet-1.17.tar.gz and did the regular manual install. Worked just fine. No need to upgrade to perl 5.8.2 just yet. CPAN: archive - great; module - so so. No doubt I/O error - me being the I/O.
