What I would like to ask is: why would I be interested
in learning Perl ?Give me the main reasons why I may be
interested in Perl rather than in PHP, ASP.... Is Perl
any useful for Artificial Intelligence development?

The initial problem of course is resolving if

"artificial intelligence"

ever really made sense in the first place, given the
unpleasant lack of definition about "intelligence"
as an opening notion to attempt to 'artifact'.

But why I would use "perl" as a starting language
for first learning purposes, and then where I would
apply it - that is something I can at least offer
some kvetching.

Currently Perl is the defacto "internet glue" the
sort of all purpose "boatswain's mate" "leatherman tool"
that has more options than you might want to know about.
I know, because from time to time, someone will tell me
about some widget set that I can do in perl that I just
look at them and say,

and I want to know that why?

Or worse yet, the moment that you happen to notice that
there are perl interpretors on OS's you didn't happen
to know were still in existence, and hence for which
there are still builds of gcc available that will allow
you to compile perl for, to which as yet there are not
even a Java JVM to work on.

So basically, one wants to know perl because it will
provide you more insights into coding as a cultic
behavior in ways that few other general purpose languages
can even hope to match.
