Hi Eric, I was a novice too when I read "Learning Perl" by Randal L. Schwartz & Tom Phoenix, the O'reilly Lama book.
I thought this book was very well written. The authors did a great job of intoducing topics in the proper sequence, as to accomodate beginners. I highly recomend it for anyone learning Perl.
