I am in the process of installing perl-5.6.2 on my SuSE Linux 8.1 machine.

well it would help if we knew what the 'failure' message was.
make test
would walk you through it. And do you really mean perl-5.6.2 or did you mean perl-5.8 ???
If you are not going with the perl-5.8, why not see if you can get it to build, or is this a backwards compatability additional build???
