You're mixing perl up with shell! Maybe what you are trying to do is: grep "Eliminating movie" update.log | awk '{ print $5'}' Or if you want this in perl, then you certainly would not be using 'grep' and not make a SYSTEM call to awk. ??? -JW __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
