This certainly seems like a buffering problem, the $| solution should 
work. Does your script or any of the modules that you are using 
selecting another filehandle (perldoc -f select, 1 argument form of 
select). The value of $| will affect the currently selected output 
channel (STDOUT is selected by default). All the print statements will 
also be directed to this output channel by default.
