Thanks for the help, Dave. As it turns out, it was a data problem--I'm trying to parse an RTF file, and was getting an unexpected style--for whatever reason, that was knocking the script for a loop.
I'm using MacPerl 5.6.1 on Mac OS 9.2.2. In desperation, I did some diagnostics on my machine, and discovered the MacPerl preferences file lost its resource fork--that probably didn't help things, either. Out of curiosity, is there a module for parsing RTF files? I try to write to vanilla perl setups, but it I can see where it might be worthwhile in this instance.
