Thanks guys for replying to my request for 'elp. Looks like I'll go with the 'print the value in the perl script and assign the value to a shell variable in the calling script' (thx tigger). The db record ID I want to capture contains letters, so ABC1234 is probably not a vald return value. Either way 'exit' wouldn't give me what I want.
