Put the book down. Go and buy learning perl from oriely. You can whip through this book in a day or two and it will lay down all of the ground work for you. Plus it is setup with exercise at the end of every chapter.
Then after you finish the book make up a project and try to apply everything you learned in a practical sense. Do it without the book.
