I'd go here: http://learn.perl.org/library/beginning_perl/
and print out a copy of Beginning Perl. Then I'd read it and go through the practice problems. Oh, and assuming you are on a Windows machine, I'd go to activestate.com and download Perl 5.8.0 and then install it on your harddrive.
