I'd go here:
http://learn.perl.org/library/beginning_perl/

and print out a copy of Beginning Perl.  Then I'd read
it and go through the practice problems.
Oh, and assuming you are on a Windows machine, I'd go
to activestate.com and download Perl 5.8.0 and then
install it on your harddrive.

That's all you need to learn the VERY BASICS of perl,
and much more.
