Hi, Having also spent all of yesterday on my problem, I can conclude that the script after all was working fine. I manually checked my input and output files and it seems that there is a bug elsewhere in some other script, many of which I did not write my self.
Thanks to Mr Conner, Mr Weber, esp Mr Newton, Mr Godin, Mr Esposito, Jenda Krynicky, and anyone else that I may have missed off. Many thanks for you input and advise. I think the take home message is to script in manageable chunks and to use comments. Of course the other one is not to take other peoples data as being absolutely correct.
