Agreed. I mentioned C purely because it will *force* you to understand better the underlying system that the admin will then be working on. Understanding header files, getting more into make, memory issues, IO issues, process management and IPC, all of these things are conveniently (and as you mentioned the rope to hang one's self with) handled for you in Perl. Most admin's I have met could do for a course or 2 in C, but then again, so could I ;-) ....
