Yes, but this is part of an devtool want to ship for MacOSX Cocoa folks.  The idea of 
expecting the users of a Cocoa application to know anything about the Unix back-end to 
MacOSX is quite possibly beyond their realm.  In addition, although the developer can 
do a local install with sudo, and then bundle the pieces such that end-users won't 
need admin rights... I was looking for a cleaner way.

That figures... I always use su when i type make install. 
Can't you do the same?

I don't have your Makefile with me, but I guess it should 
contain something like a PATH= variable. It ALWAYS contains 
something like a PATH variable...
