the answer is to set a few basic variables when you
are doing the

        perl Makefile.pl

I have a script I use, see below so that I have it all
nice and neatly set to put it in

        $HOME/lib/perl

with the man pages installing in

        $HOME/man

rather than having to remember that it would be

        perl Makefile.pl PREFIX=$HOME LIB=$HOME/lib/perl ....
