Yes, the results are surprising. According to these benchmarks, perl is not that much faster than python when doing regexs. Can this be so? It seems when I have done my own anecdotal, unscientific tests, perl was so much faster that I decided to write my script in perl. I would have expected perl to blow python or java or even C right out of the water when it comes to munging text.
