Oh thank god, I thought I was the only Perl person who didn't like 
LotR.  It's been my Secret Shame :-)  And I tried... several times...

I tried but failed to get into Bear's Foundation prequel.  I found all 
of them too meandering, for want of a better word.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Heinlein fan myself, with Asimov, Clarke, and 
Blish close behind.  There are few things as enjoyable as settling down 
to reread Stranger in a Strange Land, the Foundation trilogy, or the 
Cities in Flight tetralogy.
