Jimmy -- ...and then J. Lundeen said... % % greetings,
Hello! % % i'm interested to know if one can add a POP3 email account to a linux % system without actually adding a user account on the system? Well, yes and no, and part of it depends on your MTA and pop software. In theory, you can set up a pointer or alias for a given address that goes directly to a mailbox, so you don't have to have an account in the middle, and then tell your pop software of the username and password to allow pop access and then point to that mailbox. In practice, your MTA (possibly) or POP daemon (very possibly) may not support that. % % my goal is to allow users to have mailboxes, but not allow FTP or TELNET % access. i know how to restrict TELNET, (noshell), but am not sure about % FTP. If you use a "shell" which is not on the approved list (/etc/shells) as the user's shell (like maybe /bin/false) then s/he cannot ftp in, either. % % this may seem more like a general system mgr question, but i'm writing a % control panel in perl and need some help if anyone out there has an % answer to the above question! You probably ought to pick up a Sys Admin book as well as look at source code for other control panels :-) % % thanks! % % jimmy james HTH & HAND :-D -- David T-G * It's easier to fight for one's principles (play) [EMAIL PROTECTED] * than to live up to them. -- fortune cookie (work) [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.justpickone.org/davidtg/ Shpx gur Pbzzhavpngvbaf Qrprapl Npg!
