And, of course, if you're changing existing users you will have to change
the ownership of all files on the system, so you'll want to either do that
as part of your change (time-consuming) or store a mapping of old UID with
either new UID or login (perhaps shoehorn it into the GCOS field as you
write the entry to your new file), and heaven forbid any collisions where
you have an old user paul=5002 who will become paul=5168 but meanwhile
user bob=43 will become bob=5002 and you now have a dependency in your
chown order.
