You'll want to chomp() $hostname!  Output from the /usr/ucb/hostname
command probably has a newline at the end of it; you'll need to remove it.

But you called your hash %hosts.  Typo?

With those two changes, your code should work fine... but why make a
function?  That's what the hash is there for.
