Check out the default settings for split ;-)

ie.

use Data::Dumper
$_="mary  had   a little    lamb";
@_=split;
print Dumper \@_;


it'll give you what I think you want:

$VAR1 = [
         'mary',
         'had',
         'a',
         'little',
         'lamb'
];
