This is considered an annoying bug in some versions of the CPAN module, at least by me. If you upgrade the CPAN module itself, it will not try and install perl for you. Worked for me. Oh, and build it by hand. Don't let your old CPAN module try and build it for you or you know what will happen!
I don't think that a 1/2 install of 5.6.1 would cause your problems, although others on the list will know better than I. Double check @INC -- if your modules worked before they should still work now. perl -e 'print @INC;' from the command-line, then check your module paths against it.
