Compression reduces entropy which, if used before encryption, can make the
decryption even more difficult due to less redundancy to get a hook into.

Since we agree I think I misparsed your original message :)

is a pretty interesting analysis of an ecrypted file even if it is known
that it is encrypted at the outset.
