John: Thank you for answering the OP's question. However, Shlomi is right, the two argument form of open() is something that the general Perl community considers to be a deprecated style that should not be used with new code. This list is not the place to argue that, that ship has sailed. Shlomi: line-by-line teardowns of scripts people post in response to questions are generally not helpful, particularly when the script _will_ work as written. It makes people feel attacked and leads to defensive responses that make the list appear to be an unfriendly place.
