Well, I don't know what you mean by "The series by O’Reilly". O'Reilly has the
trio of /Learning Perl/, /Intermediate Perl/ and /Mastering Perl/ books as well
as the book /Programming Perl/ (a.k.a The Camel) as well as other books.

The general recommendation on Freenode's #perl is:

1. If you have prior experience to programming, then you should read
chromatic’s book /Modern Perl/ (which is available online with its sources
under the Creative Commons by-nc-sa licence):

http://perl-begin.org/books/#modern-perl

(Note that perl-begin.org is my domain).

2. If you don't, then check out the new edition of the book Beginning Perl by
Curtis “Ovid” Poe, which I believe is also available.

3. After all that, you should read the page
http://perl-begin.org/tutorials/bad-elements/ , which is largely based on the
book http://perl-begin.org/books/advanced/#pbp (but I excluded some advice I
didn’t consider important and added some stuff of my own).

4. You can consult the list and other resources for info on learning what you
want to do with Perl and make sure you make a wise use of CPAN:
http://perl-begin.org/topics/cpan/ .
