I've installed perl 6 as well as other perls on Debian both in chroots
as well as under /usr/local.

My advice after doing it by hand for so long is to use perlbrew.

$ apt-get install perlbrew

Then read the documentation and you're off and running. It is a great little 
tool for installing multiple perls.
