Let me see if I'm reading this right: 

(1) You start cpan.
(2) It tells you to install Bundle::CPAN and a new version of CPAN.pm.
(3) You do so, and they break cpan?

Wow.

@Tim: I've had pretty good experiences with cpanp on OSX. You might try
taking a look at that instead of cpan.
