It's not just you.  They seem to be operating under the misconception that
Perl is only good for short one-off scripts.  Educating them on how Perl can
be used, and where you've used it, might work, provided they're open to such
education.  It doesn't bode well that they have this misconception to begin
with, and it's uncertain whether it stems from simple ignorance, or contempt
for the language.
