what brian said... you've been asking quite a few beginners questions here
and i'd concurr that it's time you read a book about perl so you'll actually
learn the basics for it... both learning perl by randal schwarz as well as
programming perl by larry wall are worth your while... (both are published
by o'reilly).

if you want some more beginners explenations to perl, you might find the
tutorials i wrote at http://japh.nu usefull
