Perl lets you program on many levels, and often goes to a lot of trouble
to save you a little trouble.  This is probably one of those times where
Perl just does the right thing, and you often don't even notice.

But when you want to progress you'll invariably want to learn more.  I
do think you're right though that many programmers get a long way
without making this distinction.

Of course, it doesn't help than wantarray isn't called wantlist.
