Given that Perl was not designed with graphics in mind, it is inevitable
than any graphics module will require the installation of at least a few
external libraries.
I am not an expert, but it seems to me that you may as well stick with
GD; it is current and nicely licensed. Perhaps your OS provides you
with a technique for installing precompiled libraries such as those GD
requires?
