Solaris 2.6 instroduced large file support by allowing files up to 2GB.
With 7 and up in 64-bit mode it is unlimited. 

Solaris x86 is still 32-bit and I'm not entirely sure just how large a
file you could use reasonably on it. Try reading the lfcompile man page
and the README.solaris in the perl 5.6.1 source. Perl should be able to
handle as large a file you can make if you follow the tips in the README.
