I'm attempting to install Perl 5.005_03 on a Slackware 7.1 system
that has been upgraded to kernel 2.4.3 and uses ReiserFS inside of LVM.
Slackware 7.1 did come with Perl 5.6, but I need to install software that
specifically wants 5.005_03 and will not work with 5.6.

Something in my setup is causing a problem. Running "sh Configure
-des && make" goes smoothly, but "make test" dies with the following:

io/fs..............FAILED at test 0
io/inplace.........

At this point the console displays an invalid operand message, and the
system is seriously hosed. While it will still respond to pings and switch
virtual consoles via Alt+Fx, sshd and the console itself stop responding.

My guess is something in the Linux hints file configures Perl in a
way incompatible with one or more of Linux 2.4.3, ReiserFS, or LVM, but I
don't know what that "something" might be. My apologies if this is a FAQ,
but I couldn't find the answer.

        Thanks!
