The problem is: somebody who sends an hoax with good intentions (but obviously not knowing the phenomenon) like the very one which initialized this discussion may not send it to more addresses than the list, at least only as *blind* carbon copy (bcc). (S)He may not do this because the mail is already sent to a lot of people and the email addresses of her/his friends are (correctly) considered to be private.
