i hope i'm not going to start a jihad here, but i prefer vi and vim.
the new version has font colors and makes editing code easy on the
eyes. plus, it's free and pretty much comes with every *nix you can
get. if not vim, then at least vi. and, if you take the time to learn
a lot of the commands and such, it is very powerful. i've been using it
for 12 years now.
