Overnight I discovered that the v3.8.13 kernel which is common to the 
Farnell version, Angstrom and the 
bone-debian-7.8-lxde-4gb-armhf-2015-03-01-4gb versions drives the hardware 
correctly. For the moment I'm happy to run with an old version of the 
kernel, so that closes this issue.
