If you don't want to get your hands dirty with drivers, you can try installing latest Ubuntu, 7.04. Else if you feel adventurous (and want to tweak your laptop more for performance), you should try Debian 4 (etch). I'm using etch on my new Compaq Presario laptop, and am quite happy with it!
