Roland,

ideally BBDB should be packaged ELPA-style into the upcoming
http://elpa.gnu.org/packages/ repository.  Then users can just install
it with package.el and releases can bypass the normal "download, unpack,
suffer" cycle.  Ask on emacs-devel if you need more info; Chong Yidong
has been managing the repository contents so far.
