I'm in the middle of watching episode #3, "Bad Dancer", and had an additional thought about this series.
As Yochanan mentioned, the original "For All Mankind" series, telling to story of an alternate-history space race from the US perspective, was "Alternate history, Drama, Science fiction" (as Wikipedia puts it) _with_ a significant dollop of interpersonal soap opera -- a lot more in some seasons than in others. There was a whole lot about the troubles and family complications of the early astronauts, for example. "Star City" is, so far, able to have something similar in effect but not feel, in the form of _major_ subplots about pervasive KGB surveillance of everyone in the cosmonaut program. Thus the younger version of KBG agent Irina Morozova, often seen with headphones listening in on, and typing contemporaneous notes about, everything she hears in the apartment she's assigned to surveil. It's soap opera that doesn't feel like soap opera. Rather brilliant, I think. -- Cheers, "I've been on so many blind dates, Rick Moen I should get a free dog." [email protected] -- Wendy Liebman McQ!
