In 1977, frustrated by the lack of women and people of color in NASA’s astronaut corps, Nichols launched Women in Motion, a nationwide recruitment campaign that drew more than 8,000 applicants. Her efforts directly influenced NASA’s hiring practices and paved the way for pioneers like Sally Ride, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, and Guion Bluford. Featuring insights from cultural leaders and scientists - including George Takei, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Martin Luther King III - the film explores how Nichols’ advocacy bridged science fiction and science fact, inspiring a new generation to see themselves among the stars. Directed by Todd Thompson, Woman in Motion is both a celebration of her trailblazing career and a reminder of the power of representation in STEM.
