ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Howeird commented that there was a problem with Zoom attendee
multiplication tonight & offered a suggestion about fixing the issue & he
announced that he has a very sick cat right now who is still getting
treatment & is now lurking under the bed & then announced that after
cutting his cable & trying to use Youtube TV that the unskippable ads
therein defeated him. He has gone back to cable because paying $70 a month
for unskippable ads is worse than cable's ad-free service at $90

Valerie announced that her book, 'Jewish Science Fiction and Fantasy Before
1945' has been published this week. (Lexington, June 2021)
https://www.amazon.com/Jewish-Science-Fiction-Fantasy-through-ebook/dp/B096HLB5GJ
- she says she is still collecting essays on Jewish sf and Jews in fandom.
She also announced that she has a cover for 'The Villain's Journey'
(McFarland, Fall 2021) but it seems to be of a generic zombie.

REVIEWS:

Yochanan reviewed 'Luca' is a feel good film, the best he has seen lately
and he highly recommends it at full price & Alan also recommends it & liked
the characters;
     Yochanan also reviewed the first 2 episodes of 'Loki' on Disney Plus
as he really liked it - & there were several comments to the topic;
     Yochanan also reviewed a movie he rented called 'Us' as a very
interesting film from 2019 & it makes you think;
     Yochanan also reviewed 'Dr Who, Emperor of the Daleks', a graphic
novel by Dan Abnett & others, as very nicely written

Lisa reviewed 'Children of the Sea' a Japanese anime film, subtitled in
English as a lovely, beautiful story based on a manga, but a little
disjointed since it lacks some of the manga's context, however she really
enjoyed it & appreciated seeing it on the big screen as a Fandango event

Howeird reviewed a show he's been watching called 'Debris' as it has an
interesting premise, but the writers seem to have no idea where the series
is going. He commented that the main pair of viewpoint characters lack
chemistry between them & the series is guilty of one of his pet peeves - in
that too much of the show is shot in the dark or settings that are too dim
& therefore not worth full price

.

Dave Clark reviewed a book by John Brunner 'The Man Who Was Secrett and
Other Stories', one of the classics of sf, volume 9 - as more lighthearted
stories by Brunner & he has enjoyed reading it

Valerie said she has been reading many unexciting teen novels but also a
few great ones. She reviewed 'Front Desk' by Kelly Yang, a YA novel about
Chinese immigrants running a motel, as very impressive; then reviewed
'Color Me In' by Natasha Diaz, a YA novel about being Jewish and biracial
as impressive too; then reviewed Rivers Solomon's YA novel 'Sorrowland' as
gorgeous and deep; then reviewed Sarah Pinsker's novel 'We Are Satellites'
as a clever near future cautionary tale about adopting new technology; then
reviewed the novel 'Midnight Bargain' by C.L. Polk as having a Victorian
back-drop for a story about a female magician as charming; then reviewed
Zen Cho's novel 'Sorcerer to the Crown' as a delightful fantasy set in
Regency England; then reviewed a YA novel by T Kingfisher, 'A Wizard’s
Guide to Defensive Baking' as just charming

Sandra reviewed the movie 'Synchronic' as she really liked it, despite it
being about time travel and found it well done' check =
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/synchronic

we adjourned at 8:57 pm

and the rumor of the week = 'That Jeff Bezos will not be allowed back on
the planet after his space flight'
