Thanks, Cheryl. I'd clearly forgotten about Dos Passos until reading your
mention of him, which made me say, "Yes! Yes! Of course!" I really had fun
with the conceptualization of gender in this novel as well, how characters
quibbled over who were husbands or wives in the group families, and how a
different meaning of "bisexual" had arisen at one point. For a small time
Robinson especially managed to avoid gender references for Jean Genette,
dubbing him "the inspector" where a pronoun would have fit, but, alas, then
later started using "he" or "him" as I just did. And this character's name
kept making me think of Jean Genet, the famous French novelist, but I'm not
sure where to go with that. I too chuckled when I realized what the author was
doing in regards to the Mercurial nature of Swan and the Saturnine nature of
Wahram. The literary merits are thick and overflowing with tradition. I do go
on, but what a satisfying literary meal this
book has been for me. Loving it.

Thanks for the links, Tom.
I'm about three-fourths of the way through 2312 and I'm having a great
time with it. The novel's structure reminds me a bit of John
Brunner's "Stand on Zanzibar."
Spot on. See my review for the history of the technique:
